Baby Yoda Inspires Firefighters Battling Wildfires

Oregon firefighters have a tiny but mighty force helping raise spirits in the fight against wildfires, thanks to a five-year-old boy named Carver who sent them a Baby Yoda doll.

Carver and his grandmother bought the Star Wars toy, along with canned goods, for a firefighter donation drive. He hoped the toy would uplift spirits for the crews, amid Oregon’s devastating wildfire season. With the doll, Carver attached a note, “Here is a friend for you, in case you get lonely.”

Since then, Baby Yoda has been to four wildfires in two states, ridden in helicopters, checked people’s temperatures for COVID-19 symptoms, and even used “the Force” to move a firefighting tool known as a pulask, according to an article by The Boston Globe.

A Facebook page called “Baby Yoda fights fires” has been documenting the doll’s journey and has gained more than 30,000 followers since it arrived in mid- September.

“It’s a miracle how one small gesture can create a wave of kindness,” said Sasha Tinning, Carver’s grandmother, in an article by the Associated Press.

Wildfires in the western U.S. have scorched millions of acres, destroyed thousands of homes and claimed dozens of lives, including firefighters.

“He’s been a really big morale boost,” said staff Sgt. Jaebyn Drake, a firefighter with the Oregon Air National Guard in an article with The Boston Globe. “A lot of the people on my crew, I showed them the note and everything and they just loved it. A couple people broke down in tears. It just really meant a lot to us and it was really emotional for a lot of people.”

Baby Yoda is now so in demand after his tours in Oregon and Colorado that fire crews from California, Washington and Canada all have requested that he join them.
